Healthier Option Food Trucks

Fast food is not a new phenomenon in our country, in fact the big fast food chains pushing burgers, fried chicken and pizzas set up shop on the east coast some 50 years ago.

Without question, it is a booming industry. The numbers are staggering – some $7,160 million, yep $7.16 billion was spent a year on fast food by Australians according to a Heart Foundation study some 5 years ago. We averaged one fast food meal per week.

It was also noted that when we did, we cared less about how much we had to eat or if it was that healthy either. The average Aussie was working longer hours or both parents were working too – a sign that a family’s traditional cook may not have wanted to cook for one day a week.

With the arrival of street food, or mobile food, we’ve been spoilt for choice. Our cosmopolitan country has seen food from around the world purveyed on the streets, in parks, or on beaches. Rustled up by chefs, cooks & amateurs alike, food trucks are popping up everywhere, trying to make a dollar like any small business does.

With our ever-expanding waistlines, Aussies are turning to alternative diets in the battle of the bulge. Many food truck vendors offer gourmet dining and what’s even better is the rise of those who provide healthier options. Lactose intolerance accounts for about 4.5% of our population; coeliac disease and those who avoid gluten account for about 2.5% of Australians. Many Aussies choose a Raw food diet too & we aim to provide the whereabouts of vendors who would like to look after the minority of people who choose – or require special needs for their daily diets.

So, we’re on a quest – to find food truck vendors offering low-carb, low calorie, low sodium, high fibre, diabetic, gluten free, lactose free, low fat/cholesterol meals as a part of their fare.
